From the 1920’s and 1940’s when trick dogs such as Rin Tin Tin and Lassie won peoples’ hearts, trick dog training has become one of the most exciting new areas in dog training today. All dogs can get a title, including purebreds and mixed breeds and are registered through the AKC in either their mixed breed program (Canine Partners) or purebred (AKC or PAL). It is a fun activity to do with your dog, and is a great goal to achieve! To see more information, go to the AKC Trick Dog page.

AKC Novice Title

Novice Trick Dog Title

The dog performs 10 skills from the Novice list. (see link to “Application” below for lists of skills). If a dog has a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificate or title on record at AKC, it can do 5 Novice tricks (CGC + 5) to earn the Novice title.

Trick Dog Title Application

AKC Intermediate Title

Intermediate Trick Dog Title

A TOTAL OF 10 TRICKS ARE REQUIRED TO EARN THE INTERMEDIATE TRICK DOG TITLE. Must have the Novice Trick Dog Title; CGC is not required. See the Application linked below to see what tricks are needed for the Intermediate Trick Dog Title. If your dog performs a trick on the Intermediate list when obtaining the Novice title, they cannot repeat the behavior for the Intermediate title.

AKC Advanced Title

Advanced Trick Dog Title

A TOTAL OF 5 TRICKS ARE REQUIRED TO EARN THE ADVANCED TRICK DOG TITLE. Your dog must have their Novice and Intermediate Trick Dog Titles (all can be obtained the same day) and the CGC is not required for this test. 2 Handler's Choice tricks are allowed. No tricks that were done to achieve Novice or Intermediate titles can be repeated for the Advanced Trick Dog title.
